Ginkgo has no established classical Sanskrit name or classical Ayurvedic churna, ghrita, or kashaya preparation. The leaf's taste, energy, post-digestive effect, and dosha assignments given here represent a contemporary Ayurvedic interpretation, not a classical consensus.

Ginkgo belongs to contemporary cross-cultural herbal practice rather than the classical Ayurvedic materia medica. Reading its leaves as bitter, astringent, and cooling is an interpretive application of Ayurvedic principles.

Sit beside a ginkgo, or place a fallen leaf before you, and take five easy breaths while tracing its fan-shaped veins with your eyes. Let this be a contemplation ritual rather than a homemade tea.

  • Flavonol glycosidesQuercetin-, kaempferol-, and isorhamnetin-related compounds with antioxidant activity in laboratory studies; their contribution to clinical effects remains uncertain.
  • GinkgolidesTerpene lactones, including ginkgolide B, that affect platelet-activating factor and other signaling pathways in experimental studies.
  • BilobalideA terpene lactone studied for effects on nerve-cell signaling and protection in laboratory and animal models; these findings do not establish a human memory benefit.

Ginkgo is a deciduous tree and the only living member of an ancient plant lineage. Its distinctive fan-shaped leaves have radiating veins and often a central notch; they turn brilliant yellow in autumn.

Native to China, ginkgo has been preserved around temples and cultivated worldwide as an ornamental street and garden tree. Female trees produce fleshy-coated seeds with a strong odor. Modern medicinal extracts generally come from the leaves, not the seeds.

Ginkgo has a long history in Chinese medicine, where its seeds were used more prominently than its leaves, especially for respiratory and urinary complaints. Its modern reputation for memory developed largely through twentieth-century research on standardized leaf extracts in Europe. Laboratory findings involving circulation and nerve-cell protection prompted clinical trials, but those trials have not confirmed that ginkgo prevents dementia or reliably improves memory in healthy people.

  • Seeds were traditionally used for wheezing and cough; this historical use is not a recommendation to eat them.
  • Seeds were used for frequent urination and urinary leakage in Chinese medicine.
  • Leaf preparations have been used more recently for age-related memory and concentration complaints.
  • Leaf extracts have also been used for circulation-related symptoms, including walking discomfort.

Does not prevent dementia ·

A meta-analysis of two randomized trials involving 5,889 participants found no significant reduction in dementia incidence versus placebo (odds ratio 1.05, 95% CI 0.89–1.23), with no considerable heterogeneity. This supports no demonstrated preventive benefit, rather than proving that any benefit is impossible.

Dementia symptom relief · 中等

Source 10 reports that systematic reviews suggest dementia symptom improvement, source 3 describes efficacy in mild dementia, and source 4 reports cognitive and functional improvements in vascular cognitive impairment, although its cognitive confidence interval reaches zero. The supplied excerpts for sources 1 and 8 omit results, limiting assessment of consistency and preventing a Strong rating.

Healthy adult memory enhancement · 初步

None of the supplied sources directly reports memory-enhancement findings in healthy adults. The esports trial excerpt concerns performance recovery after mental fatigue and provides neither a specific memory outcome nor results supporting this claim.

  • If considering ginkgo for cognitive symptoms, seek assessment first: memory changes can have treatable causes and should not simply be self-treated.
  • Clinical studies commonly used standardized leaf extracts totaling 120–240 mg daily, sometimes in divided doses. These are research doses, not a personalized recommendation.
  • Common research extracts contain approximately 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, with tightly limited ginkgolic acids. Other products, leaf teas, and homemade preparations are not equivalent.
  • Any clinician-supervised trial should include a review of benefit and side effects after roughly 8–12 weeks rather than continuing indefinitely without reassessment.

安全性

  • Leaf extracts can cause headache, dizziness, stomach upset, or allergic reactions. Bleeding is a concern, particularly with interacting medicines or bleeding disorders.
  • Avoid during pregnancy because of possible bleeding and labor-related risks. Breastfeeding and pediatric safety are insufficiently established.
  • Do not self-medicate with ginkgo seeds: raw or roasted seeds can cause poisoning, including seizures. People with epilepsy should avoid ginkgo unless their clinician specifically approves it.
  • Tell your surgical team about ginkgo well before a procedure; they may recommend stopping it in advance. Raw leaves and poorly controlled extracts can contain irritating, potentially toxic ginkgolic acids.

  • Anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines, such as warfarin, apixaban, aspirin, and clopidogrel: possible increased bleeding risk.
  • NSAID pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and naproxen: may add to bleeding risk.
  • Antiseizure medicines: ginkgo may interfere with seizure control; clinical review is essential.
