传统智慧
阿育吠陀新手
Mentha × piperita has no securely established classical Sanskrit name or species-specific classical preparation; pudina is a broader mint name. Contemporary Ayurvedic herbalism commonly describes peppermint as pungent and bitter, cooling, with pungent vipaka, using a light leaf infusion for digestive comfort; dosha effects depend on preparation and amount, with excess potentially aggravating vata or pitta.

各传统视角
Peppermint belongs chiefly to contemporary Ayurvedic practice rather than the classical materia medica. A fragrant leaf infusion brings together cooling sensation and aromatic pungency, traditionally interpreted as easing digestive wind and moving kapha.
正念仪式
After a meal, steep a small pinch of dried peppermint leaves in hot water, covered, for five minutes. Notice the fragrance, let the tea cool comfortably, and take three unhurried sips.
活性成分
- MentholMajor essential-oil constituent that activates cooling receptors and contributes to intestinal smooth-muscle relaxation.
- MenthoneMajor volatile constituent contributing to the oil's aroma; its independent clinical contribution remains uncertain.
- Menthyl acetateAromatic ester in the oil; not established as a digestive treatment on its own.
- 1,8-CineoleMinor volatile constituent with laboratory biological activity; its contribution to peppermint's gut effects is unclear.

植物介绍
Peppermint is an aromatic perennial in the mint family, a naturally occurring hybrid of watermint and spearmint. It has square stems, dark green, toothed leaves, and small pinkish-purple flowers arranged in spikes.
Originating in Europe and the Middle East, it favors moist soil and grows vigorously through underground runners. It is now cultivated worldwide for its leaves and essential oil, whose familiar cooling sensation comes largely from menthol.
探索过程
Mints have a long history in European and Middle Eastern food and medicine, although ancient references do not always distinguish peppermint from other mint species. Peppermint was formally described in England in the late seventeenth century and subsequently became an important cultivated medicinal herb. Its traditional use for wind and digestive discomfort led to modern research on intestinal muscle relaxation and, eventually, clinical trials of enteric-coated peppermint oil for irritable bowel syndrome.
传统用途
- Leaf infusions for gas and bloating.
- Preparations for mild digestive cramps.
- Tea after meals for indigestion and a feeling of fullness.
- Aromatic preparations for nausea; this traditional use does not establish effectiveness.

使用方法
- For occasional mild digestive discomfort, adults can try a tea made by steeping about 1.5–3 g of dried peppermint leaf in 150–200 mL of hot water for 5–10 minutes. This is a traditional preparation, not a proven IBS treatment.
- For IBS, studies commonly use enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules providing approximately 180–225 mg per dose, two or three times daily for 2–8 weeks. Formulations differ, so follow the product instructions and seek clinician or pharmacist guidance.
- Swallow enteric-coated capsules whole. Do not chew them or substitute drops of essential oil in water; concentrated oil can irritate tissues and does not mix evenly with water.
- Seek assessment for persistent symptoms, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, fever, or severe abdominal pain rather than relying on herbal treatment.
安全性
- Peppermint can cause heartburn, reflux, nausea, or anal burning. It may be unsuitable for people with significant gastroesophageal reflux or a hiatal hernia.
- Ask a clinician before medicinal use if you have gallstones, bile-duct obstruction, or liver disease. Allergic reactions are possible.
- Ordinary food amounts differ from medicinal doses. Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data for concentrated preparations are insufficient; use only with professional advice.
- Do not give concentrated peppermint oil to infants or young children, or apply it near their face. Pediatric capsules require age-appropriate professional guidance; long-term continuous-use safety is not well established.
药物相互作用
- Antacids, proton-pump inhibitors, and H2 blockers can raise stomach pH and may cause some enteric-coated capsules to release too early. Check the specific product with a pharmacist; simply spacing doses may not solve this with long-acting acid suppressants.
- Peppermint oil may affect drug-metabolizing enzymes, but clinically important interactions are poorly established. Ask a pharmacist before combining concentrated oil with medicines requiring close blood-level monitoring, such as cyclosporine.
