Традиционные знания

Новичок в аюрведе

Valeriana officinalis has no securely established classical Sanskrit name; Tagara generally denotes Indian valerian, Valeriana jatamansi, also known as V. wallichii. The qualities given here reflect a contemporary Ayurvedic interpretation, not a classical species-specific account; traditional Tagara preparations such as churna should not be automatically attributed to European valerian.

В разных традициях

Contemporary Ayurvedic herbalism approaches European valerian as a warming, grounding herb for restless vata, with bitter-pungent qualities that can also reduce kapha. Its place is best distinguished from classical Tagara rather than presented as the same botanical medicine.

Осознанный ритуал

If valerian is appropriate for you, prepare a modest evening infusion according to a reputable product’s directions. Let its earthy scent mark the end of the day, taking three unhurried breaths before sipping; avoid combining it with alcohol or sedating medicines.

Действующие вещества

  • Valerenic acidA characteristic root constituent that influences GABA-related signaling in laboratory studies; its contribution to clinical effects remains uncertain.
  • Acetoxyvalerenic acidA related sesquiterpenic acid used in chemical characterization of extracts; its independent therapeutic role is not established.
  • ValerenalA volatile-oil constituent investigated for nervous-system effects in preclinical research; human relevance is uncertain.

О растении

Valerian is a perennial flowering herb native to Europe and parts of Asia, now naturalized in North America. It grows in damp meadows, along stream banks, and in moist woodland edges, often reaching roughly 1–1.5 meters tall.

Its upright stems carry divided leaves and clusters of small, sweetly scented white or pale pink flowers. The underground roots and rhizomes are used medicinally; when dried, they develop a strong, distinctive odor quite unlike the flowers.

Открытие

Valerian appears in ancient Greek and Roman medical writing, and Galen recommended it for sleeplessness. Its reputation developed through generations of observation and traditional practice rather than a single discovery. European herbalists later used it for nervous complaints and restless sleep. Modern researchers have investigated its root extracts and their effects on calming brain signals, but clinical trials have not consistently confirmed the benefits reported in traditional use.

Традиционное применение

  • Helping people settle at bedtime and sleep more easily.
  • Easing nervous tension and restlessness.
  • Relieving nervous digestive discomfort.
  • Soothing menstrual cramps in some European herbal traditions.

Подробнее об исследованиях

Improved sleep quality · Умеренный

The 2024 randomized trial reports improved overall sleep quality, and the 1982 study found improved subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, and awakenings, but its EEG changes were not statistically significant. The systematic reviews describe inconsistent findings and substantial methodological problems; the supplied narrative-review excerpts provide context but no additional quantified efficacy results.

Reduced stress and anxiety · Умеренный

The anxiety review reports promising animal findings and positive clinical signals for valerian, while the other reviews discuss anxiety as an associated disorder or traditional indication. The supplied excerpts do not provide trial-level anxiety results, null findings, or specific evidence of reduced stress, so the benefit remains uncertain.

Как применяют

  • Some adult sleep studies have used 300–600 mg of root extract about 30–120 minutes before bedtime. Extracts differ substantially, so these amounts are not interchangeable across products; follow product-specific professional advice.
  • Tea made from the dried underground parts is a traditional preparation, but its strength is variable and evidence from extract trials does not automatically apply to tea.
  • Choose a single-ingredient product with independent quality testing when available. Persistent sleep problems deserve assessment; cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is a better-supported treatment.

Безопасность

  • Short-term use appears reasonably well tolerated in many adults, but long-term safety is uncertain. Side effects can include headache, digestive upset, vivid dreams, and next-day drowsiness.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if sleepy or less alert after taking it.
  • Avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety data are inadequate. Do not give it to children without pediatric guidance.
  • Rare liver-injury reports exist, often involving mixed products, so causation is uncertain. Stop and seek medical care for jaundice or dark urine. After prolonged heavy use, discuss stopping with a clinician because withdrawal symptoms have occasionally been reported.

Взаимодействие с лекарствами

  • Alcohol, benzodiazepines, prescription sleeping tablets, opioids, and sedating antihistamines may cause greater drowsiness or impairment when combined with valerian.
  • Anesthetics and other medicines used during procedures may have additive sedating effects. Tell your surgical team about use well before a procedure.
  • Other sedating herbs or supplements, including kava and melatonin, may increase sleepiness when combined.
